Multimodal medical image fusion algorithm for edge texture preservation

Abstract

Multimodal medical image fusion is of great significance for clinical diagnosis and has now become an important method for medical diagnostic experts to predict and diagnose diseases. To address the problems of loss of detailed texture information and unclear structure during multimodal medical image fusion, this paper proposed an unsupervised end-to-end fusion network incorporating masking technology termed ETPFusion. The method used an edge texture preservation module, which can preserve more texture detail information in the feature encoding stage. Secondly, to capture the dependencies of different locations of the feature map in the feature decoding stage, this network introduced a double convolution module. Meanwhile, considering that the feature information may be gradually lost as the number of network layers increases, this network embedded the edge texture preservation module in the residual learning as a way to supplement the texture feature information and reduce the redundant information in the source image. The texture information mask module is the most important part in the image reconstruction stage, which aims to strengthen the texture information of the feature map and extract its fine-grained information. Comparison experiments with multiple methods on multiple fusion tasks showed that the proposed method ETPFusion achieved an average improvement of 4.79%, 9.38%, 17.7% and 26.36% in MI, NMI, PSNR and VIF metrics, respectively, resulting in excellent fusion effects and higher practical value in fields such as clinical diagnosis.
