Cloud workflow scheduling approach considering idle time slots and multiple task sequences

Abstract

Workflow scheduling with deadlines is a challenging problem in cloud computing. Combining the effects of different task scheduling sequences and the using of idle time slots of virtual machines on scheduling performance, this paper proposes an improved artificial bee colony scheduling approach (PNABC) to address the problem, with the aim of minimizing the workflow execution cost and improve the utilization of virtual machines while meeting deadlines. In PNABC, Firstly the neighborhood selection mechanism to replace the original probability method to select good food sources in the onlooker bee search phase, which helps prevent PNABC from falling into local optimization prematurely; Secondly propose a decoding method combining task sub-deadlines and idle time slots to decode food sources into scheduling solutions, the method take task deferred execution operation to improve the utilization of virtual machines; Finally because of the stochastic feature of ABC, the priorities of tasks may be violate the dependencies of tasks during the iterative evolution, designing a method by combining food source and ready tasks to generate a valid task scheduling sequence. Applying PNABC on workflow instances of different scales. Experimental results show that PNABC has better performance than the comparison algorithms in terms of meeting deadlines, minimizing execution cost and improving the utilization of virtual machines.
