Modeling and analysis of environment-aware COVID-19 transmission

Abstract

Since the existing epidemic models hadn't considered the influence of environment on the infection of virus, and the classic epidemic model can't well reflect the feature of each individual, this paper developed an environment-aware susceptible-infected-recovered(EA-SIR) model by introducing an individual contact matrix to describe contact between each indivi-dual. This model derived environment-aware infection rate, the basic reproduction number and its upper bound. The upper bound of EA-SIR's basic reproduction number wasn't greater than the classic SIR indicating that virus was difficult to spread in EA-SIR. People's sense of self-protection helped block the spread of virus, therefore, EA-SIR was suitable for describing the virus spread theoretically. This paper conducted experiments using COVID-19 data of Diamond Princess and four cities in China to evaluate the performance of EA-SIR, and used mean absolute error as evaluation standard. The simulation results show that EA-SIR can better describe the spread of COVID-19.
