Optimization of build orientation in 3D printing based on adaptive layering

Abstract

The selection of build orientation in 3D printing is one of the key factors that affect processing quality. Aiming at the current algorithm only with consideration of the optimization on the premise of equal thickness layering, this paper proposed a build orientation optimization algorithm in terms of an adaptive layered model. Firstly, this paper analyzed the surface accuracy of products under different build orientation in combination with the characteristics of 3D printing layer by layer, and established a build orientation dependent optimization function to minimize volume error. Then, it employed the genetic algorithm to search the optimal solution in the global scope to determine optimal build orientation through steps such as STL model rotation transformation and adaptive layering. Finally, this paper conducted the comparison between proposed and published algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can further reduce the volume error and improve the surface quality.
