Conditional adversarial domain adaptation with attention mechanism for cross-domain facial expression recognition

Abstract

Cross-domain facial expression recognition remains to be a challenging topic, due to lacking of sufficient labeled training data in practical applications. This paper exploited conditional adversarial domain adaptation to deal with the inconsistent data distributions of the cross-domain facial expressions, where it embedded an attention mechanism to extract discriminative features of facial expression images. In particular, it applied entropy function to guarantee the mobility of unpredictable facial expressions of images by priority of classification. Experimental results on both lab-controlled and real-world facial expression databases show that the effectiveness of the proposed approach for facial expression recognition.
